I played a couple of tournaments with UQ Tennis over the past week and really enjoyed it. A bit of nostalgia at work, too--it was one of the first titles I bought from Downey Games, way back in 2006. So here's an attempt at the 1985 ATP season.
First up is the ASB Classic, also known as the Benson & Hedges Open, held at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, on Jan. 7.
32-player draw, no byes
Outdoor, hard surface
$94,200 prize money
None of the big names made the trip to New Zealand, so it was a wide-open event.
FINALS: Steve Guy (New Zealand) def. John Fitzgerald (Australia), 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
Heading to Philadelphia next for the U.S. Pro Indoor tournament. John McEnroe will be going for his fourth consecutive win at this event.
17-year old Boris Becker upset John McEnroe in five sets to win the tournament. (Becker would win Wimbledon later this year). Before reaching the finals, Becker had only lost one set, and that was to Jimmy Connors in the round of 16.
-Tim Mayotte def. Heinz Gunthardt: 7-6, 6-4 (Gunthardt injured in previous match)
-Boris Becker def. Ben Testerman: 6-3,6-4 ("A" game for Becker)
-Miloslav Mecir, Sr. def. Mats Wilander: 5-7, 6-4, 7-5
-John McEnroe def. Cassio Motta: 6-2, 7-5
