  Bunt Ratings 2008  Popular
Description: 2008 APBA Bunt Ratings - Free Download

I was always frustrated by the fact that in APBAball, pitchers who were bad hitters were also bad bunters, even though in real life that may have been quite capable of putting down a sacrifice bunt. So one of my enhancements was to give each player a bunt rating. Each player is rated for his bunting ability as B1, B2 or B3 (best to worst). When a sacrifice is called, instead of looking up the dice roll on the player's card look up the dice roll in the appropriate column on the bunt table, use that value to lookup the result in the game chart.

  DVAL Board Reader  Popular
Description: With Dick Moore's permission, I have updated the board reader utility by Bill Middleton with the DVAL boards. I have incorporated all of Dick's innovations including fielding charts, unusual play randomizers, error randomizer, and the Moore Pitching charts to autocalculate each play result. The ony major adjustments are the addition of arm ARM, where you will need to enter the ARM rating for OFs only and for each catcher you should enter their +/- value. For Pitcher grade please utilize their MG numerical value, the spreadsheet will autocalculate their basic grade based on the Moore Pitching Charts. As Bill states, this software is for the APBA lovers and as such may be distributed to enhance the enjoyment of the game, but may not be used for commercial purposes and is in no way affiliated with APBA. Please enjoy and special thanks to Dick Moore, Bill Middleton, and APBA Games!

  DVAL Modified APBA Boards  Popular
Description: THE DVAL MODIFIED BASIC GAME BOARDS

* Nothing on results 1-11 have been changed. All hit, out and baserunner advancement results are as they appear on the BG boards. Also, there has been no change in the effect of W, X, Y and Z for the pitchers.

* The results 12-41 have been modified where necessary to make Fielding One ALWAYS better than or equal to Fielding Two, which is ALWAYS better than or equal to Fielding Three.

* On numbers 12-41, sometimes you must roll and consult the Master Game’s Fielding Column Finder Chart (can be ordered from APBA for $2) to determine what fielding column to use FOR THAT PLAY ONLY. The left margin indicates the fielder who must be rolled for. If there is no fielder in the left margin, the result is the same for all columns, so no roll is necessary. In a couple of cases, you will see (SSC) or (2BC) instead of (SS) or (2B). That is to indicate that the fielding matters for that result ONLY WHEN THE INFIELD IS IN (C). In some other cases you will see an “*” after the position (LF*, etc.). That is to indicate that fielding matters for that result ONLY WHEN THERE ARE LESS THAN 2 OUTS. These are plays where the batter result is the same in all columns, but the fielding affects base runner advancement. Obviously, with two outs, that is irrelevant and the dice roll is not necessary.

* For bases empty, #22, the margin says “roll”. This was originally a SS number on our boards. Since there are a lot of 22’s on the cards, the SS was getting far too many rolls (yes, we kept track), so it has now been distributed. For bases empty #22, roll first and look at the Error Distribution Card to determine the fielder involved in the play, then roll for that fielder to determine the column. For a description of the play, if it’s an infielder it’s a ground ball in the hole and the good fielder gets to it, the bad fielder doesn’t and it’s through for a SINGLE. If it’s an OF, it’s a shallow pop fly and the good fielder makes a running catch, the bad fielder lets it drop for a SINGLE.

* There are a couple of results (ex: Runner on Second, #39) where an injury occurs and the board reads something like “1-3:runner, 4-6: 3B”. That means you roll one die to see whether the runner or the fielder was injured.

* In the interest of space, the official scoring of some plays had to be abbreviated. For example, a double play might appear as “A-SS PO-2B A-2B PO-1B” or as “SS-2B-1B” or as “6-4-3”.

* The section at the bottom of the Bases Empty board entitled “Special DVAL Rules” can be ignored. It’s a special set of rules we use in our league, unrelated to the modified boards.

* The following objectives are achieved by the use of these boards:
1. Fielding is more important in general. I’ve always felt that in APBA, you would be better off with a good hitting SS-7 (Jeff Blauser) than a weak-hitting SS-9 (Rey Ordonez).
2. The differences from one player to the next are more subtle. Currently a SS-9 is great, but a SS-6, 7 or 8 are all about the same.
3. The more important defensive positions are emphasized. There are a few extra results where the SS fielding matters, for example. Also, a weak OF will hurt you less in LF than he will in CF or RF.
4. Catcher’s fielding now has some effect! There are some results where a catcher stops a wild pitch, drops a throw at the plate or even throws out a base stealer depending on his defensive rating.
5. Speed matters a little more (this is not a big effect) because in some cases the speed of the base runner is used to make the difference between the fielding columns. For example, Fielding Three might say “1st on error, runner to 3rd”, but Fielding Two might say “1st on error, runner to 2nd (F to 3rd)”.
