I am playing a seven game series with Downey Games Cardboard Baseball with some slight modifications. Thanks to a very good friend's help I have pro-rated the players on my teams to 600 ABs and 200 IPs so I can use one The Pitch and one The Swing chart. I have expanded the included rare plays to make it more possible but no more likely that some oddities could happen.

The first series I wanted to do with the game involved 2 of my favorite 7 or 8 Dodgers teams. This time it will be the 1963 Dodgers vs. the 2016 Dodgers. We could get up to three games with Sandy Koufax vs. Clayton Kershaw. Here is what happened, in some detail, in the first game of that dream confrontation.

63 Dodgers are the visitors and bat first. Three up, three down. No strikeouts for Kershaw but the ball doesn't leave the infield.

16 Dodgers are home and in the first Corey Seager works a walk out of Koufax and Adrian Gonzalez drives a Koufax delivery to the warning track in center but Willie Davis runs it down. Koufax gets a strikeout.

Top of the second, Wally Moon gets the first hit, an opposite field single to left. No runs but still no strikeouts as the 63 team has fewer free swingers than their current counterparts.

Bottom of 2, Trayce Thompson singles with 2 outs. Chase Utley taps weakly to third but Tommy Davis, not LA's best fielder, comes in on it and makes a strong throw to retire the side. Koufax 1 more strikeout.

Top of 3, Maury Wills gets first extra base hit with a double but is stranded when Junior Gilliam grounds out. Still no Kershaw strikeouts. Bottom of 3, No hits and no strikeouts but Moon makes a solid catch in left field.

Top of 4 good and bad for Kershaw. He strikes out Justin Turner for his first K, but then Frank Howard deposits a curve over the left field wall for a 1-0 lead. Kershaw ends the inning with another K. In the bottom, Koufax fans 2 around a Gonzalez single. But after 4 it is 1-0 in favor of 63.

Top of 5, John Roseboro fans. Willie Davis singles but Koufax bunts badly and Davis if forced. Wills singles but Koufax stops at second. Gilliam grounds out to finish the threat. Bottom of 5, Thompson starts with a double. After Utley strikes out, Kershaw bunts him to third. Joc Pederson walks and then Koufax uncorks a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

Top of 6, Tommy Davis singles but is erased when Howard is easily doubled up, Utley to Seager to Gonzalez. Fairly walks, the first for Kershaw but Moon fans and Kershaw has 4. In the bottom, Koufax fans 2 and doesn't let Yasiel Puig's single hurt him. Koufax has 7 strikeouts.

In the 7th, Willie Davis' second single is wasted when Koufax again fails to bunt him over. In the bottom, Thompson singles again but two more Koufax strikeouts keep the 1-1 tie from being broken.

Both pitchers are getting a bit tired as the 8th begins. Gilliam opens with a triple to right that rattles around in the corner before Puig can gun it back to the infield. Infield comes in. Tommy Davis hit a shallow fly to right but Puig's arm isn't tested. With the infield in, Howard grounds to third and Gilliam holds for 2 outs. Fairly walks again, the second given up by Kershaw. Manager Dave Roberts leaves Kershaw in to face the lefty Moon, but he loops a single to center that barely bends grass when it lands and the 63 team leads 2-1. Kershaw departs and JP Howell comes in to retire Roseboro on a line drive to Seager. In the bottom, Koufa is one base runner away from being impacted by fatigue, but he fans Seager, his 10th punch out and the next 2 hitters ground out.

In the top of the 9th, Willie Davis singles for the third time and Koufax bunts him over. Kenley Jensen is summoned from the pen to keep the score 2-1 and he does by striking out Wills and retiring Gilliam on a pop to Seager. Ron Perranoski is warming up for the 63 team, but Puig is retired on a pop out to Wills, Yasmani Grandal is retired for the fourth straight time on a grounder and Thompson hits the ball well to center but it falls harmlessly into the glove of Willie Davis to end the game.

The 63 team has 10 hits, nine of them off Kershaw, who strikes out 5, walks 2. The 2016 team gets just 5 hits as Koufax goes the distance with 10 Ks and 2 walks.

Next up will be Don Drysdale against Rich Hill, who is healthy enough to make the start.
