Thirty-five golfers have completed the first round of the 2015 ATG British Open this afternoon. Of these 35, only 20 will make the cut after the second round. I will take the 20 lowest scores. If there is a tie for 20th place, all golfers tied with that score will make the cut.

The Open Championship course is extremely difficult and it is not expected that scores will be high. The leader board after Round 1 is as follows:

Curtis Strange 68 -4
Seve Ballesteros 69 -3
Lee Trevino 70 -2
Arnold Palmer 70 -2
Fuzzy Zoeller 70 -2
Sam Snead 70 -2
9 golfers finished 71 -1

Strange had a great day with the putter, sinking several long putts to finish in the lead. Ballesteros was solid all day. Despite finding sand and missing some fairways, Fuzzy Zoeller was able to get out of trouble and stay within a couple of strokes of the lead.

2015 ATG Masters champion Gary Player had a terrible day, as he sailed many approach shots over greens, causing him to finish the day with a 76, +4, currently in last place. Other notables are Jack Nicklaus (71, -1), Tiger Woods (73, +1), and Phil Mickelson (73, +1).

Round 2 is in the books and 22 golfers have made the cut to play the final two rounds. This second round saw only two golfers score under par, as the combination of weather conditions and tricky pin placements made life very difficult for the contestants. At the end of the day, Hale Irwin and Cary Middlecoff propelled into the top two spots on the leader board on the strength of their 71, -1 efforts today. Irwin is the only golfer in the field to finish each of the first two rounds under par. Irwin's play has been the model of consistency, avoiding trouble and making the shots he needs to make. Middlecoff's rise up the leader board was a little more dramatic, as he scored an eagle on the the long Par 5 14th hole, sinking his long putt to the delight of the large gallery at St. Andrews.

Tiger Woods had the next best round, finishing with a 72, E for the day. Woods enters Round 3 at +1, 3 strokes off Irwin's lead score. It was a difficult day for Jack Nicklaus, as he found several deep bunkers from which he could not easily escape. He finished the day with a +6, 78 and missed the cut. Gary Player, who had the worst score after Day 1, had a much better day today, finishing with a 72, E par round as his putting game hit stride. However, like Nicklaus, Player missed the cut by one stroke.

The leader board after the second day:

Hale Irwin -2
Cary Middlecoff -1
Curtis Strange E
Seve Ballesteros E
Fuzzy Zoeller E
Payne Stewart E
Larry Nelson E
Tom Weiskopf E
Tiger Woods +1
Lee Trevino +1
Arnold Palmer +1
Greg Norman +1
Byron Nelson +1
Tom Watson +2
Nick Price +2
Nick Faldo +2
Craig Stadler +2
Phil Mickelson +2
Sam Snead +3
Ernie Els +3
Bernhard Langer +3
Tom Kite +3

Obviously, it is anybody's tournament at this point, with just 5 strokes separating the 22 golfers remaining in the tournament.

On the strength of a good day off the tees, Fuzzy Zoeller propelled into first place after the Third Round of the 2015 ATG British Open. Zoeller's 71, -1 round was the best of the day, matched only by Tom Watson. Watson and Zoeller were the only two golfers to finish the day below par, as the golfers continued to have trouble on this difficult course. The course has been so difficult that only two golfers have managed rounds below 70 (Curtis Strange 68 and Seve Ballesteros 69 - both in Round 1). The worst rounds have been Jack Nicklaus's and Chi Chi Rodriguez's 78s, both in Round 2, effectively causing both of them to miss the cut.

The field remained tight, however, as only 5 strokes separated the best and worst finishers in this round and only 8 strokes separate the top from the bottom of the leader board. The leader board reads as follows:

Fuzzy Zoeller -1
Cary Middlecoff E
Hale Irwin +1
Payne Stewart +1
Tom Watson +1
Curtis Strange +2
Larry Nelson +2
Lee Trevino +2
Arnold Palmer +2
Greg Norman +2
Seve Ballasteros +3
Byron Nelson +3
Nick Price +3
Tom Weiskopf +4
Tiger Woods +4
Nick Faldo +4
Craig Stadler +4
Phil Mickelson +6
Ernie Els +6
Bernhard Langer +6
Tom Kite +6
Sam Snead +7

Going into the Final Round with a one-stroke lead, Fuzzy Zoeller picked a great time to shoot the best round of the tournament, coming in at a blistering 67, -5 (well, blistering for this course!) to remove any drama and claim the 2015 ATG British Open trophy. Zoeller finished 5 strokes better than Seve Ballesteros, who also had a great round, coming in at 68, -4 for the day. Cary Middlecoff finished in third after a remarkably consistent tournament, tied with Tom Watson who, but for one bad round, might be hoisting the trophy himself.

There was nothing particularly notable about Zoeller's day other than it was just plain good. By the time he was finishing up the last few holes, there was no question that he would be champion.

FINAL LEADER BOARD

Fuzzy Zoeller -6
Seve Ballesteros -1
Cary Middlecoff E
Tom Watson E
Arnold Palmer +1
Payne Stewart +1
Tiger Woods +2
Curtis Strange +3
Tom Kite +3 (69 for Final Round)
Hale Irwin +4
Greg Norman +4
Craig Stadler +4
Larry Nelson +5
Nick Faldo +5
Ernie Els +5
Byron Nelson +6
Sam Snead +6
Lee Trevino +7 (Final Round 77)
Nick Price +7
Tom Weiskopf +8
Phil Mickelson +10
Bernhard Langer +10

I thought there was a good chance that I'd be playing another playoff round. My plan was to play a full matchplay round if that happened, rather than sudden death as I did for the 2015 ATG Masters. Zoeller spoiled that fun, though!! Laughing

As a matter of fact, it is his third major. And this is his first without having to go to a playoff!!!
