I'm playing an All Time Greats Ryder Cup with POTG Golf, using the Hole by Hole Match Play rules. For the Foursomes Matches, I'm combining the ratings of the two Golfers to get a composite rating in each category.

The roster of each team is listed below. The first four players listed (in bold) will play in each of the five sessions. The remaining eight players will play in one session each in both of the first two days, and of course everyone will play a Singles Match.

USA

Ben Hogan
Jack Nicklaus
Arnold Palmer
Tiger Woods

Billy Casper
Walter Hagen
Bobby Jones
Byron Nelson
Gene Sarazen
Sam Snead
Lee Trevino
Tom Watson

Europe

Seve Ballesteros
Nick Faldo
Colin Montgomerie
Harry Vardon

Willie Anderson
Henry Cotton
Sergio Garcia
Tony Jacklin
Bernhard Langer
Sandy Lyle
Jose-Maria Olazabal
Ian Woosnam

All pairings and matchups will be determined by random draw. The course used will be the Master's Tournament Course from the ATG Set.

On paper this is no contest, but, we'll see................................

Day 1 - Fourball

(USA) Jack Nicklaus - Lee Trevino v (Europe) Willie Anderson - Colin Montgomerie

The Europeans showed right away that they came to play by winning the 1st Hole. Holes 2 & 3 were Halved, with Nicklaus and Trevino taking the 4th Hole. The Match is All Square after 4 Holes. Anderson and Montgomerie captured the 5th Hole and number 6 was Halved, leaving the Europeans 1Up after 6 Holes. The dominance of the Americans then kicked in as they won Holes 7, 9, 10, 12, & 14, with Holes 8, 11, & 13 being Halved. This left Nicklaus and Trevino 4Up with just 4 Holes to play. The Match seemed to be done and dusted and appeared to be in the bag for the Americans. But, that bag developed a rather large hole in the bottom as Anderson and Montgomerie won Holes 15, 16, & 17, leaving the Americans just 1Up with 1 Hole to play. As the participants made their way to the 18th Tee there was not a sound to be heard among the gallery. What just a short time ago seemed to be a sure thing was now anything but. To the collective relief of the crowd, and both Nicklaus and Trevino, the Americans claimed the 18th Hole to win the Match, 2Up.

Europe 0

Day 1 - Fourball

(USA) Billy Casper - Ben Hogan v (Europe) Nick Faldo - Jose-Maria Olazabal

Casper and Hogan win the first 2 Holes and the favor is returned as Faldo and Olazabal win Holes 3 & 4. The Match is All Square after 4 Holes. The 5th Hole is Halved and then Casper and Hogan repeat their opening by winning Holes 6 & 7. Faldo and Olazabal take the 8th Hole and number 9 is Halved. The Americans are 1Up after 9 Holes. Casper and Hogan like to win in blocks of 2 as they take Holes 10 & 11 to go 3Up after 11 Holes. Faldo and Olazabal win number 12 to cut into the Americans lead and after 12 Holes Casper and Hogan are 2Up. Holes 13, 14, & 15 are Halved and time is running out for the Europeans as Casper and Hogan are still 2Up with just 3 Holes left to play. The Americans seal the deal by winning Hole 16, taking the Match, 3&2.

USA 2

If you listen closely, you can hear the well-mannered golf fans whisper-chanting "USA! USA! USA!..."

Ballesteros and Lyle take Hole #1, with Jones and Woods taking #2. Holes 3 & 5 are Halved, with the Americans taking #4 and the Europeans claiming #6. After 6 Holes the Match is All Square. Day 1 - Foursomes

(USA) Byron Nelson - Tiger Woods v (Europe) Colin Montgomerie - Ian Woosnam

Each side took one of the first two Holes, with Nelson & Woods winning #1, and Montgomerie & Woosnam claiming #2. Hole #3 was Halved, and then as the saying goes, it was all over but the shouting. Nelson & Woods took Holes 4,5,9,11,12,13, while Montgomerie & Woosnam took absolutely nothing, except for a whipping. Nelson & Woods were dominant, winning the Match 6&5.

There go those quiet, polite chants again - USA! USA! USA!

Jeff, can you explain to me the scoring in these matches? The Nelson-Woods vs. Montgomerie-Woosnam match ended "6&5". What does that mean?

They were quiet after #17 but you're right, they started up again after #18 was finished. <G>

In the Nelson/Woods Match, 6&5 means that they were up by 6 Holes (they had won 7 Holes, Montgomerie/Woosnam had won 1 Hole), with 5 Holes left to play. The Match ended after 13 Holes because even if Montgomerie/Woosnam had won all 5 of the remaining Holes, they would have still lost the Match because Nelson/Woods would have won 1 more Hole than them. The same applies to 4&3, 2&1, etc.

Sometimes you will see a score of 3&1. This occurs when a golfer/team is up by 2 Holes with 2 left to play, and they win the 17th Hole. In the Palmer/Watson v Faldo/Jacklin Match, if Palmer/Watson had won the 17th Hole they would have won the Match 3&1.

If a Match goes all 18 Holes you will see 3 possible scores:

All Square (tied)
1Up (one golfer/team won 1 more Hole than their opponent)
2Up (one golfer/team won 2 more Holes than their opponent)

Thanks for following along, I have a lot of fun with the write ups !

Day 1 - Foursomes

(USA) Jack Nicklaus - Gene Sarazen v (Europe) Henry Cotton - Harry Vardon

The first 3 Holes were Halved. Nicklaus and Sarazen take 4 & 6, Cotton and Vardon take #5. After 6 Holes the Americans are 1Up. 7 & 8 are Halved, Cotton and Vardon win #9, Nicklaus and Sarazen win #10. After 10 Holes, Nicklaus and Sarazen are still 1Up. #11 is Halved, Cotton and Vardon take #12, Nicklaus and Sarazen take #13. The Americans are still 1Up in the Match. Hole #14 is Halved, but Nicklaus and Sarazen claim #15 to go 2Up with just 3 Holes left to play. The gallery could be heard getting just a bit louder as they anticipated a Match win for Nicklaus and Sarazen. But, that same gallery was stunned into silence as Cotton and Vardon took both #16 & #17 to Square the Match with only 1 Hole left to play. The win that was anticipated by the gallery never occurred as Hole #18 was Halved, and so was the Match.

USA 5.5
Europe 1.5

Day 1 - Foursomes

(USA) Walter Hagen - Ben Hogan v (Europe) Seve Ballesteros - Sergio Garcia

The first 3 Holes were Halved and then Hagen and Hogan kicked it into a gear that Ballesteros and Garcia simply did not have. The Americans took Holes 4,5,6 to go 3Up after 6 Holes. #7 was Halved and the Spaniards showed signs of life by winning #8. Hagen and Hogan were 2Up after 8 Holes and then they began to get serious. Sir Walter and Bantam Ben claimed Holes 9,10,11,12 to go 6Up after 12 Holes. #13 was Halved giving Hagen and Hogan an easy 6&5 Match victory.

USA 6.5
Europe 1.5

Day 2 - Fourball

(USA) Jack Nicklaus - Gene Sarazen v (Europe) Willie Anderson - Nick Faldo

Anderson and Faldo take #1, Nicklaus and Sarazen take #'s 2 & 3, and the Americans are 1Up after 3 Holes. #'s 4 & 5 are Halved, then the teams trade 6 & 7, with Nicklaus and Sarazen taking #6, Anderson and Faldo taking #7. After 7 Holes the Americans are still 1Up. Hole #8 is Halved and from that point forward the Europeans didn't seem to even be on the course. Nicklaus and Sarazen claimed #'s 9,10,12,13, with #11 being Halved. After 13 Holes the Americans are 5Up with just 5 left to play. #14 was Halved and that's all that Nicklaus and Sarazen needed as it gave them the Match, 5&4.

USA 7.5
Europe 1.5
