Hi,

In reading over the Nostalgia section of RLB and how to rate players, I have noticed that the new Downey defensive ratings are quite different than in the older game.

In the new game it appears the worst defender in a +6, and in the old game it was 0.
In the old game the defensive ratings were subjective but were rationed out using the leftover points after subtracting the raw shooting ratings of the top 7 players on the team in minutes played from the team's power rating. In the Downey version it seems to be correlated to team defense, but I can't really tell what stat or combination of stats it correlates to.

Does anyone know how the new defensive ratings are calculated and why +6 in the new poorest rating instead of 0?

Kevin H.

I don't know the answer to this, but I do know that some have questioned the concept of "+" defensive ratings. Effectively, a "+" defensive rating gives the shooter a better chance of making a shot while defended than if he had an open shot (for which the defender's rating is not taken into account). I can see the logic in that argument, but it has not really bothered me.

I hadn't thought of that!

I am starting to look at the difference in the FAC's for the old and Downey games as to differences. I'm not really sure there are any besides moving the court designations to +/- numbers.
