1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers replay with POTG Basketball
The '72-73 Philadelphia 76ers were historically bad, finishing the season with a 9-73 record and a .110 winning percentage. They held the distinction of having the NBA's worst record until the Charlotte Bobcats ended the shortened 2011-12 season with a 7-59 record and .106 winning percentage. As the Bobcats would have had more opportunities for wins if the season had been a full 82 games, and the 60's - 70's were in my opinion the best decades for pro basketball, I'll always consider the Sixers of 1972-73 as holders of the NBA's worst record, until some team proves otherwise over a full season.
It's difficult to find positive things to say about a team that only wins 9 out of 82 games, but here's a few things to consider about these Sixers which show that they might not have been quite as bad as their 9-73 record would indicate:
-Their expected W-L according to Basketball Reference was 15-67.
-They lost their first 4 games by a combined total of 22 points.
-During the season they lost 2 games by 1 point, 2 by 3 points, 6 by 4 points, and 6 by 5 points.
With a few breaks they might have achieved those 15 wins that Basketball Reference says they should have had, putting them into the horribly bad category, as opposed to the historically bad.
Actual lineups will be used, up to 10 players, based on the boxscores at Basketball Reference.
Here we go......
Game 1
Philadelphia 76ers @ Chicago Bulls
Chicago Stadium
October 10, 1972
A surprise right off the bat as the 76ers come into the Windy City and defeat the hometown Bulls by a score of 100-98 in the season opening game for both teams. Philadelphia overcame a 20 point disadvantage due to adjustments, down from 24, in defeating the Bulls. The Sixers had 4 players crack double digits, with 2 others just missing. Bill Bridges led the winners with 23, followed by Fred Carter with 18. The Bulls had 5 players score 10 or more, topped by Bob "Butterbean" Love with 24. "Chet the Jet" added 18, while "Stormin' Norman" tossed in 14.
actual result:
Philadelphia - 89
Chicago - 95

Game 2
Seattle SuperSonics @ Philadelphia 76ers
The Spectrum
October 11, 1972
A day after winning their season opening game on the road the Sixers fall in their home opener to the Seattle SuperSonics, 117-102. Seattle had 6 players net double digits in scoring, led by Spencer Haywood with 27, and an unexpected 20 points from Bud Stallworth. The Sixers had 4 players in double figures, headed by Fred Carter and John Block who scored 21 each, but they couldn't keep pace with the visiting SuperSonics.
A note about Spencer Haywood, who is a significant figure in NBA history. After his initial pro season in 1969-70 with the Denver Rockets of the ABA, Haywood was signed by the Seattle SuperSonics even though he had not been out of high school the requisite four years, the NBA rule at the time. Haywood challenged the NBA by filing a lawsuit, which eventually made it's way to the U.S. Supreme Court where it was decided in Haywood's favor, forever changing the NBA.
actual result:
Seattle - 105
Philadelphia - 100

Game 3
Buffalo Braves @ Philadelphia 76ers
The Spectrum
October 13, 1972
The Buffalo Braves, who tied for the second worst record in the 1972-73 NBA season at 21-61, came into the City of Brotherly Love and whipped the hometown team up one side of the court and down the other, defeating the Sixers by a score of 143-114. Buffalo had 6 players tally double digits, including 2 in the 20s and 1 in the 30s. Bob Kauffman led the Braves with 33, almost double his actual season average. '72-73 Rookie of the Year Bob McAdoo added 26, with Elmore Smith notching 22. The Sixers had 4 players in double figures, all with 20+. John Block had 25, Manny Leaks 22, Bill Bridges and Fred Carter 21 each, but the team effort fell far short.
One thing is certain, when a team like the Buffalo Braves can come into your building and leave with a 29 point victory, you know that it's going to be a long, long season.
actual result:
Buffalo - 104
Philadelphia - 101

Game 4
Philadelphia 76ers @ Buffalo Braves
Buffalo Memorial Auditorium
October 17, 1972
The first game against the Braves was bad, the rematch in Buffalo was worse. Four days after receiving a 29 point whipping by the Braves in Philadelphia, the Sixers travel to Buffalo and receive an even harsher whipping, this one by 39 points, 122-83. The good, if there is such a thing in a 39 point loss, the Sixers defense gave up 21 fewer points than they did in the game at home. The bad, the Sixers anemic offense scored 31 points less.
Buffalo had 8 players hit double digits for the game, led by Randy Smith with 25 and Dick Garrett with 18. Somehow the Sixers defense managed to keep Howard Komives out of the double digit column, and Bill Hewitt out of any scoring column. Philadelphia had 4 players score at least 10, but nobody could crack 20. Fred Carter had 19, John Block 14, Bill Bridges 11, and Manny Leaks 10.
Things have gotten progessively worse for the Sixers since that season opening win in Chicago, with losses by 15, 29, and 39 points.
actual result:
Philadelphia - 114
Buffalo - 122

actual (0-4)

Game 5
Philadelphia 76ers @ New York Knicks
Madison Square Garden
October 21, 1972
If Philadelphia fans thought things couldn't get any worse for their pro cagers, they were wrong. The Sixers travelled to the Big Apple and were dealt a merciless 54 point hammering at the hands of the hometown Knickerbockers, 138-84. Philadelphia had no answer for New York's offense as the Knicks had 6 players break double figures. "Dollar Bill" led the home team as he totaled 30, with "Clyde" Frazier adding 20. The Philadelphia offense was anemic once again, as they failed to crack 85 points for the second game in a row. Fred Carter topped the Sixers in scoring with 24, followed by Freddie Boyd with 19.
After the carnage was over, several sportswriters claimed that during a timeout near the end of the game they saw two Philadelphia players restraining Sixers head coach Roy Rubin as he attempted to throw a towel onto the court.
actual result:
Philadelphia - 88
New York - 111
Philadelphia record:

There's no doubt about it - that Philadelphia defense certainly has Manny Leaks!!
Sorry - I can't resist a bad joke. I'm picturing my daughters rolling their eyes now..... |

Thanks Walter. The Sixers have taken some severe beatings in their last few games. I've played enough POTG Basketball to know that as the season progresses the stats will get even better. |

Game 6
Philadelphia 76ers @ Boston Celtics
Boston Garden
October 23, 1972
It's a rough spot in the season when a 33 point loss isn't as bad as your previous game. After losing by 54 in the Big Apple the Sixers go to Beantown where the Celtics hand them another crushing defeat, 127-94. Philadelphia can take heart from the fact that they broke 85 points, something they couldn't do in their two previous games. Boston had a balanced scoring attack with 7 players in double figures, but none of the 7 made it to 20. Dave Cowens and Paul Silas led the winners with 19 each. The Sixers had 5 players in double digits, led by Fred Carter with 25, while a 6th just missed the mark. Philadelphia had 4 players combine for a total of 0 points.

Philadelphia - 85
Boston - 105

Game 7
Cleveland Cavaliers @ Philadelphia 76ers
The Spectrum
October 25, 1972
After a disastrous road trip the Sixers return home to The Spectrum but the end result is the same, a blowout loss. Philadelphia fails to reach 85 for the third time in four games, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers by 28 points, 109-81.
Cleveland had 5 players put double figures in the scoring column, led by Austin Carr and Rick Roberson who tallied 21 each. Lenny Wilkens added 17 for the Cavaliers. Philadelphia had 4 players in double digits, topped by Freddie Boyd with 20. John Block netted 17, with Bill Bridges and Fred Carter each scoring 16. Once again the Sixers didn't get much of a team effort as 5 Philadelphia players totaled just 4 points.

Cleveland - 113
Philadelphia - 108
