I broke out the Men's ATG set for my 3rd annual ATG Masters Tournament. Defending champion Gary Player was joined by 38 other greats in the quest for the green jacket. The field will be cut to 25 after the first two rounds. The ATG Masters course card is extremely difficult and golfers will have difficulty scoring below par and the first day's results bear that out.

In the opening round, Ben Hogan played a consistently good brand of golf to come in with a -3, 69 to capture the early lead. Byron Nelson used a strong fairway game to place in second with a -2, 70, tied with Fuzzy Zoeller. Sam Snead had a real bad day among the various hazards at Augusta and finished with a +6, 78. It is likely that he will not make the cut, along with Craig Stadler, who turned in the worst performance of the day with a +7, 79 after consistently missing greens on his approach shots.

The top of the leaderboard looks like this:

Ben Hogan -3
Byron Nelson -2
Fuzzy Zoeller -2
Greg Norman -1
Payne Stewart -1
Ken Venturi -1
Lee Trevino -1
Jack Nicklaus -1
Tom Watson -1
Phil Mickelson -1

Other golfers of note: Tiger Woods turned in an even-par performance as did Gary Player. Arnold Palmer had a disappointing day with a +3, 75.

Round 2

Waving his putter like a magic wand, Arnold Palmer stormed back into contention with a tremendous -6, 66 round. Palmer made putts from every distance and contour and now finds himself one-stroke behind tournament leader, Greg Norman, who managed to come in at -3, 69 despite finding bunkers and rough all day.

This was cut day and the cut score was +4, 148. Eleven of the 39 golfers who began the tournament were cut, including Sam Snead (151), Johnny Miller (153), and Bernhard Langer (153).

The top of the leaderboard after 2 rounds looks like this:

Greg Norman -4
Arnold Palmer -3
Payne Stewart -2
Byron Nelson -2
Nick Faldo -1
Phil Mickelson -1
Ben Hogan -1
Cary Middlecoff E
Gary Player E
Tom Watson E
Lee Trevino E
Ken Venturi E
Fuzzy Zoeller E

It's great to see so many projects with POTG Golf. With all 3 golfers from the ATG set who were involved in "The Match" having made the cut, I'll be pulling for Ken Venturi but he has his work cut out for him.

Round 3

Tournament leader Greg Norman turned in the best round of the day with an even-par, 72 to maintain and extend his lead. Jimmy Demaret also shot a 72 on the day, aided by some terrific bunker shots. It was a challenging day for all of the golfers, however, as many had difficulties with the Augusta's long holes. Arnold Palmer came in at +3, 75, dropping 3 strokes to Norman. Payne Stewart and Byron Nelson had good days with a +1, 73 and they find themselves in second place, 3 strokes behind the leader.

Ian Woosnam and Chi Chi Rodriguez each shot over 80 for the round. Rodriguez had problems on the long holes and Woosnam never felt comfortable with his tee shots.

The leaderboard after Round 3 looks like this:

Greg Norman -4
Payne Stewart -1
Byron Nelson -1
Arnold Palmer E
Phil Mickelson E
Ben Hogan E
Jimmy Demaret +1
Nick Faldo +2
Cary Middlecoff +2
Fuzzy Zoeller +2
Gene Sarazen +2
Sandy Lyle +2

It looks like it's Norman's tournament to lose. Gary Player had a similar lead in last year's ATG Masters and collapsed on the last day, winning only after a playoff, so anything is possible.

FINAL ROUND

Norman Wins 2016 ATG Masters!

Greg Norman sufficiently protected his 3-stroke advantage heading into the final round to secure the victory in the 2016 ATG Masters. Norman shot a +2, 74 for the round, good enough for a 2-stroke victory over co-runners up Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan. Palmer and Hogan tied for the second-best rounds of the day with an even par, 72s. Palmer was masterful with the sand wedge and Hogan was simply consistent the whole day. The best round of the day, however, went to Ken Venturi who came in with a -1, 71 after a big day on Augusta's par 5 holes. Venturi was the only golfer to score under par for the round.

The top of the leaderboard looks like this:

Greg Norman -2 286
Arnold Palmer E 288
Ben Hogan E 288
Phil Mickelson +1 289
Payne Stewart +2 290
Byron Nelson +3 291
Nick Faldo +3 291
Cary Middlecoff +3 291
Ken Venturi +3 291

Four golfers finished with a +4, 292. Last year's champion, Gary Player, finished tied with 2014 ATG champion Tiger Woods at +6, 294. In the 3 seasons I have run this tournament, Norman is the only golfer to finish the tournament under par. The ATG Masters course card is a beast!!
