Downey Games is proud to announce the release of the Minneapolis (AWA) Year Book for Ultra Quick Wrestling.

Frank Coutinho has created a gem with this set.

The American Wrestling Association covered the areas of  Minnesota, Chicago and Indianapolis during the 1980’s.   Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska were part of the AWA.   As the 80’s moved along, the AWA reached into other parts of the county and into Canada; Memphis, Edmonton, Calgary, Baltimore, New Jersey and Las Vegas.  The 80’s started with a resurgence in the AWA attracting big named stars and for several years Vern Gagne’s dream Federation was on a level with the WWF and NWA often referred to as The Big 3.

All told, there are 140+ wrestlers (male and female), and 4 managers, and two all-new interview cards to add even more excitement to your Pro Wrestling World. As a special bonus, there are 6 Specialty Match cards. Now you can add authentic Cage Matches, Falls Count Anywhere Matches, Dog Collar Matches, Nebraska Bull Rope Matches, Russian Chain Matches, and Boot Camp Matches. Frank has left no stone unturned in his research, bringing an entirely accurate snapshot of the time period.

The E-Book is available here: http://www.downeygames.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5_12_108&products_id=3484

The Printed sets are available here: http://www.downeygames.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_3_104&products_id=3483

Like Gord, I'd like to see a roster if possible. I followed the AWA closely in the 70s and early 80s, but by the late 80s it was largely unrecognizable to me.

I would like to see ratings for 1960's when I was a kid in Minneapolis and watched rasslin on WTCN with Verne Gagne, Mr. High and Mr. Low, Crusher and we need a role for that turkey neck promoter Wally Karbo.

I would love to see a yearbook for the WWE (maybe use the WWWF/WWF years as a cut-off point) as well as one for the NWA/JCP/WCW years.

In the tag team list you have The Mad Russians listed as Soldat Ustinov,Boris Zukhov & Alixis Smirnoff but no card for Smirnoff.
Was he inactive or was the card just missed ?
If just missed can you list it here or send one off list ?

Thank you
Gordon
BTW Soldat Ustinov won my first 32 man Battle Royal to take the heavyweight Championship for card # 01, came from behind several times to win it

Smirnoff was a fill in for the Russian team. During the 80's Alexis spent time with no less than 6 Frederations. Smirnoff who was better known as Michael "the Judge" Dubois did finish his career with the AWA jobbing for The Rockers so his numbers are OK for a fill in but far from championship.

Alexis Smirnoff - 255 lbs Siberia, Russia

Finishers - Heart Punch & Siberian Sickle

TOTAL - 1200

TAG - 150

Size - 25

Speed - 0

Strength - 25

Savvy - 0

Cheat - 25

Tech - 0

Cage - 25

Object - 0

Brawl - 25

Ladder - 0

Table - 25

I hope this helps.

Frank

Congrats to Soldat for his winning the title. I can see where he would have to come back for the win but he cdertainly has the ability. His size and strength can be an avantage if they are rolled. I remember Soldat when he wrestled as Tony Rumble. He was good in the ring and good in interviews. His AWA team of The Mad Russians managed by Sheik Adnan El-Kassie took a bad hit when Boris Zukov left to the WWF. After that Soldat could never find a partner to make the team jell as it did with Boris. Even El-Kassie teamed with Soldat but to no success.

You may have it it right when you sent Soldat in as a single. It found him unexpected gold. Imagine if the Russians could win the Tag Title. They would have it all.

Zukhov made it to the third pairings but fellow stable member Crusher Jerry Blackwell tossed him out. Soldat Ustinov took out Dick the Bruiser,Nick Bockwinkle (the favorite),Ken Patura and finally Super Destroyer Mark III for the belt. Some big guns did not do so well and yes they do have a shot at Tag Team Gold.

Thank you for the Smirnoff card, I have several set but right now AWA 80's is at the top of the pile.

Best wishes
Gordon
