1982 NCAA Football Division I

The Ohio State Buckeyes reign as the top the top team with a perfect 12-0-0 record. The Buckeyes (9-3-0) actual had to pull a few upsets to gain the top position and they saved the best for last. After beating Michigan 21-17 to win the Big Ten they met a powerful UCLA team that was a clear 7 point favorite and pulled off the upset 28-27. Texas the only other undefeated team at Bowl time lost to Clemson in the Cotton Bowl and fell to 3 in the final pole. Southern Methodist gained a lot of respect with a 11-1-0 record and came in 2nd in the pole. Nebraska 11-2-0 lost to Auburn in the Orange Bowl. Penn State an early season pick for number 1 lost 2 early season games and finished at number 5. It should be mentioned that Vanderbilt, always a bottom dweller, finished the year with a 10-2-0 record and was ranked at number 10.

Army upset Navy in their traditional game 24-20. On a sad note Fullerton State, my alma mater, could only manage a 3-9 record and 1-5 in the PCAA.

Division II
James Madison (13-1-0) rode the tails of two huge upsets of Delaware to eventually take the top spot in Division II. The Dukes, ranked 2nd at seasons end, had to face the Blue Hens in the semi-finals hoping to have a shot at undefeated Texas State. The Dukes nipped Delaware 24-23 and then upset the undefeated Texas State Bobcats 21-14 to win the Division II Title. I used a 12 team playoff systen with an elimination round.

Division III
The celebration is still going on in Johnson City, TN as the carson-Newman Eagles won the Division III Championship. Carson-Newman met Shippensburg (PA) for the title with the eagles taking a hard fought 31-24 win. The Eagles finished the year at 11-1-1.

I'm pretty sure 1982 was a bad year for Syracuse. Not so sure about Hobart. (Two schools near where I grew up.) How'd they do in your replay?

I didn't use Hobart. Division II and III were made up by me. Syracuse was 3-8 and 1-5 against future Big East teams. They were Independent but played a Big east schedule.

I forgot to mention that Syracuse at 3-8 was in my replay. They actually improved from the actual that was 2-9.

Congrats on finishing the replay. Great write ups too. I was wondering how you calculated your poll rankings and bowl matchups. Thanks.

I used the power rankings for End of Season 1981 then added and subracted as 1982 progressed by my replay. Going into the Bowl games Texas was undefeated and ranked at #1.

http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cfindex.htm

I picked the Bowl games by using the real life Bowl Game teams. Not the named team but the rank by Conference. I listed the rankings for the Bowls and then tried to fill in that way

If Independent #1 played against SEC #1 then I picked them that way. In this case it was Penn St (Independent #1) vs Vanderbiklt (SEC #1). In real life SEC # 1 was Alabama and they played Penn St.. The Florida Citrus was # 4 SEC vs #6 Independent. #4 SEC was Georgia and # 6 Indie was Boston College. I* real life Auburn played Boston College. I made some changes when needed. Example the All-American Bowl pitted #2 WAC vs #5 SEC. My #2 WAC was New Mexico and I needed an extra team so I chose Tulsa who in reakl life was ignored. Tulsa rose to the occasion and pulled an upset.

So the answer is that i tried to stay with real life conference standing for Bowls but used some fill-ins when needed.

Very interesting. I understand how you arrived at your bowl game match ups but for the power rankings, did you run the Howell formula week to week to get your rankings? And I'm trying to figure out the formula used to arrive at the actual power rating and how you add or subtract as the season develops. Thanks for the info.

I started with the power ranking from the End of Season before (so...1981). Clemson was the top team. For every loss a team drops 5, for every win they push up as far as they can. If the loss comes in a Bowl then I drop them 2 slots. I am not a slave to the system but for the most part I try to follow it. The bootom line is that teams who go undefeated will be ranked at the top or near and teams that lose 3+ games will generally be down around 20 in the rankings. The exceptions I make are for teams in a lesser conference. For exampole; Tulsa played in the Ohio Valley Conference. They were very good and finished with an 11-1 record but they face teams that were marginal in their own league. So overall their 11-1 record would be considered maybe 8-4 in the Big 10. It is a judgement call. I will be adding a Conference by Conference write-up for this year as I did in 1980 and other seasons. Those seasons are available atthe Ultra Quick College football access.

Thanks again for the explanation. It incorporates further realism to ultra quick college football. Looking forward to your conference by conference summaries.
