Does anyone out there own BLM Football?
I would like to know more about the game, including pics.
How would you rate it and is it worth the $70 he is asking for it on ebay?
Thanks

Hi Virgil,
I used to have one of these that I bought in 1969. I recall that it was a really nice looking game -colorful charts, nice cards.
The game itself had some problems. On passes you could choose your receiver, but not whether the pass was long, medium or short. The length of the pass was determined by the receiver's average gain.
On running plays, 3 and 4 yard gains never happened, which is kind of strange. Overall the stats worked out fairly well, though, and I recall it was fun to play. The defense had individual "ace" ratings that you could use at strategic times, but there was also an optional team rating you could use for solitaire play.
So, the high price is probably based on the good quality boards and materials. Sorry I don't have any pictures, but my version of the game is long gone now. I recall the boards being large - they take up a lot of room on your table.

I owned the game about foty-five years ago. Really not my first choice for early to mid 1960s football games...had much more fun with Negamco and APBA in those days.
The game play was somewhat cumbersome (that was a basic problem with all of BLM's games back in the day). The most intriguing aspect of the game were the defensive ace cards which were great for head-to-head play but lost their appeal and utility in solitare play.
I never played much solitare with the game and typically only brought it out when a friend came over for head-to-head. For the games available back then, I saw it as a distant third behind its "sister" Negamco and APBA.
If you're a game collector $70.00 for a new game (I assume your're looking at Big League Game Co. on eBay) is a fair price (I don't know where else you'll actually find a new game these days), and I've bought from the seller several times...top-notch seller!
If, however, you're just looking to explore 1950s-60s circa football boards, you might want to keep that $70 in your pocket and consider Negamco as an alternative. |
