The 1970 Super Fight - Marciano vs. Ali

I ran across an article that I thought would be of interest to the readership. Click here to read a January 4, 1970 newspaper article on the 1970 computer fight between Marciano and Ali.

As noted in another thread, I plan to stage a re-creation of the 1970 computer bout between Ali and Marciano using Data Boxing. I will post the results on January 20th - the 41st anniversary of the event. Stay tuned.

I remember the fights being broadcast over the radio. The times were very different and the feeling of the war was controversial. Some people were rooting for anyone except Ali. Ali had changed his name and then refused to enter the service when drafted. The recreated fights took on an actual happening. I think that Ali lost to Jack Johnson in the original tournament The Marciano-Ali fight was done pretty well a few years later.

15 years or so after that the same idea was on TV with great NFL Football teams. If I am not mistaken the results were taken from Lance Haffner's computer football and ESPN used various highlight films of the respected teams.

Frank,
I remember seeing those same highlight shows on ESPN with Steve Sabol and one other commentator. They were very good, entertaining and at times hilarious as Sabol would act like a funny man. The highlights were pieced together very well and scripted like it was an actual NFL game. I wish I had taped them when they were on, they were more exciting than some of the NFL games on tv! ESPN Classic should put those on in place of all the Poker Tournament shows (A sports classic???? Who thought of that??? ESPN Classic use to been good at one time but got bad when all you see is poker tournaments....how about some old ESPN content such as USFL, CFL and other stuff). Just an idea.

But those shows were just terrific.

One of the ESPN stations, I think classic, has some games from the past including many from the USFL. They also have some AWA Wresting from the late 80's. Once in a while they will cover the Sat afternoon with the AWA. It is interesting to watch because it was when the AWA was on its way out but still had some good action.

I am going to check my listings, it's been a while, but the last time I checked, some time ago, they had this fetish about poker tournaments. While I like poker, it's not a sport....I think it's dumb to have two or three announcers analyze a poker hand.....dumb!

I did, however saw ESPN Classic a couple months ago when they had a Sugar Ray Robinson segment and they showed the final Robinson-Lamotta bout in it's entirety. Now that's good. Long time ago, before ESPN took over Classic Sports Channel, had one night of one sport, another night of another sport, one night featuring talk shows such as the Joe Namath Show and Sports Challenge and Greatest Sports Classics. They even had NHL Films, highlighting certain games of the week and Stanley Cup videos......since that time, we have the NFL Channel, the NBA Channel, MLB Network and NHL Network, so some of the stuff that ESPN Classic/Classic Sports Network can be seen on those channels. Eight years ago, they showe the old White Shadow series about a high school basketball coach and his team from the projects. That was cool.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but Frank touched on a topic that was so cool and trivial!

That's cool that you heard the actual live radio broadcasts of Woroner's computer HW tourament. I still remember watching the Ali-Marciano computer fight on TV when I was a kid (it was broadcast on Wide World of Sports).

The 1970 Muhammad Ali-Rocky Marciano computer fight was featured in the 2006 Rocky Balboa movie. It is available at Amazon.com in a DVD entitled The Superfight - Marciano vs. Ali (1970). This is a great historical 2 DVD set that contains the filmed Ali-Marciano computer fight including interviews with Ali, Marciano, Angelo Dundee and commentary by Burt Sugar and others. The radio broadcasts of Woroner's computer heavyweight tournament in the late 1960s are also included. Jimmy Braddock, Joe Walcott, Joe Louis and Nat Fleischer discuss the computer fights which are announced by Guy LeBow. This DVD also features discussion with boxing historian Tracy Callis.

Replay of the 1970 Ali-Marciano Super Fight

On this very night in 1970 The Super Fight was shown around the world in theaters and later broadcast on ABC (1970) and CBS (1977).

The Super Fight was a filmed computer-simulated fight between Muhammad Ali and Rocky Marciano using an NCR-315 computer. The Super Fight was produced by Murray Woroner, who also produced an all-time computer heavyweight tournament that was broadcast on radio.

What a fight!

The fifth round alone was worth the price of admission! (probably not, because that fight would have HIGH DOLLAR tickets, but you know what I mean).

A ticket for the 1970 Super Fight was $5.00 and the "fight" grossed $5 million: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Super_Fight

Let's transform back in time forty years ago to 1970. A January 20, 1970 newspaper article from the UPI reported“a mythical all-time heavyweight championship will be shown in 1,000 theaters around the country”.. The Associated Press reported some of the post-fight comments from fans included 'fantastic,' incredible,' 'amazing'”.. Marciano defeated Ali in The Super Fight by KO in round 13.

I used DATA BOXING PC to resurrect the 1970 Super Fight between Muahmmad Ali and Rocky Marciano. To simulate the fight, Ali was represented with his peak 1963-67 ratings and Marciano was represented with his peak ratings [1952-55]. The bout was set for 15 rounds.

Let's take a look at some selected rounds from the computer fight narrative...

Forty-two years ago on this very date, the Rocky Marciano vs. Muhammad Ali computerized film bout was shown in theaters worldwide. I staged another re-creation of the 1970 Super Fight between Ali and Marciano using Data Boxing. In a thrilling bout that saw both men hit the canvas, Marciano KO'd Ali in 11. The details are at my my website.
