Like the 70's football era, the players, the unis, and the commentators.

Tell me more about how you like this game if you can?
I have several seasons of UQP Football.

Hi Pavel !

The 70's were my favorite era for football ! Don Shula's Dolphins, Chuck Knoll's Steelers, Tom Landry's Cowboys, John Madden's Raiders, Bud Grant's Vikings and George Allen's "Over-the-Hill" Gang in Washington to name just a few !

As with UQ Hockey, I like the fact that you can determine the outcome of the games quickly and with realistic results. I thought that it would be fun to dress up the topic (pardon the pun : ) with the uniforms, commentators and stadiums. I hope that you continue to enjoy the 1973 replay !

This is very enjoyable to follow. The 70's is my favorite NFL decade as well. Please excuse if this has been addressed somewhere before but what system are you using to get the individual player stats?
GV - Jan 10, 2017 - 08:11 AM
Post subject: RE: Week 5
Hi nebsha!

It's pretty basic and similar to what I use for my UQ Hockey individual player penalty minutes. I built a table of twenty values for passers, rushers and receivers and roll on that for each game.

Let's take Larry Csonka of the Miami Dolphins for example. Larry rushed for 1,003 yards in 1973. If we divide that by 14 games, then Csonka rushed for 71.6 yards per game. Based upon that data, I constructed the following table:

I'll roll a D20 for each Miami game to see how many yards Larry rushed for. So, if I roll a 7, then Csonka ran for 68 yards in the game. If I roll a 19, then he rushed for 96 yards.

I hope you enjoy the 1973 replay !

George

I have enjoyed following this replay. 1973 was a neat season, in that there seemed to be either great or poor teams. Not a lot of teams in the middle. I remember that the Vikings had The Purple People Eaters, and that Daryle Lamonica (a personal favorite) was replaced by Ken Stabler after a few games for the Raiders. Great quarterbacks moved around also...Unitas from Colts to Chargers, Hadl from Chargers to Rams, Gabriel from Rams to Eagles....it was kind of like "All great quarterbacks please move one team to your right"! <ha ha>

It was odd to see all those QBs playing for new teams after spending so much of the careers with their previous ones. Players really didn't move around too much during that era of football. Daryle Lamonica ! "The Mad Bomber" ! The Raiders were transitioning to Kenny Stabler with kicker George Blanda always waiting in the wings to step in and help out when needed. Thanks for following the topic and I hope that you continue to enjoy the replay!

I've noticed that there have been no tie games. 1973 was the last season of no overtime. Are you playing an overtime when a game is tied through 60 minutes?

Also, does Miami have a favorable end-of-season schedule to give them a realistic chance at 14-0? Who do they play yet?

Atlanta is an interesting surprise, and Cincinnati a dissapointment. But all in all, teams are finding their historical levels fairly consistantly. Those that historically won are doing so in your replay.

Hi Bill !

Thus far, I have not had a tie game at the end of regulation play in my 1973 replay, but if the circumstances do arise, I will indeed play overtime to try and decide a winner.

The Dolphins prevailed in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day to keep their unbeaten streak intact, and they will be tested once more in Week 12 on Monday night in Miami against the Steelers. Their remaining games after Pittsburgh would be in Baltimore for Week 13 and at home to close out the regular season against the Lions. Stay tuned !

Atlanta has had a huge season to earn themselves a playoff berth. I expected the Rams to run away with the NFC West but not so !

In addition to the playoff picture taking shape and Miami's potential unbeaten season, another thing to watch for is whether or not O.J. Simpson will rush for 2,000 yards. We shall see !

Thank you for following the replay !

Great picture of Darryl Lamonica in your posting of the Raiders 35-0 triumph. OJ has 1500+ yards---3 games to go, so he's just about on pace. If he can get at least one 200 yard game, it'll make it easier. Falcons keep rolling, and the Oilers have matched their historical win total (1 win). It was during this season that the great Bill Peterson experiment was ended, and Sid Gillman was brought in to survey the wreckage. Poor Bill Peterson---he just looked so lost on the sidelines. He came from across town from Rice University, and previously had some good teams at Florida State. Oilers owner Bud Adams named Peterson as head coach in 1972 with one of those legendary "lifetime contracts". Having gone 1-13 in 1972, he only made it 5 games into the 1973 season before that "lifetime" contracts was ripped up.

This season saw three of my particular favorite players have their last seasons as frequent contributors---Darryl Lamonica (Raiders), Jim Kiick (Dolphins), and Gary Larsen (Vikings).

Hi Bill ! We're coming down the home stretch now ! Simpson needs 440 yards to reach 2,000. The Bills face Atlanta, New England and the Jets in their final three games. Gillman didn't fare much better after taking over for Peterson in Houston. Things wouldn't turn around for the Oilers until Bum Phillips and Earl Campbell came onboard.

We've been watching OJ chase 2000, and Miami 14-0. But three teams have outside shots at having dual 1000 yard rushers. With a little good luck, Los Angeles (McCutcheon/Bertlesen), Miami (Morris/Csonka), and Cincinnati (Clark/Johnson) will reach that milestone.

Los Angeles is in gear now, pushing Atlanta in the NFC West. But a historical Super Bowl matchup of Miami and Minnesota is what I'm predicting. Hopefully, it will be a closer game that what actually happened.

All excellent points, Bill ! Cleveland has quietly had a good season and is now one game behind Pittsburgh in the AFC Central. There are interesting Wild Card scenarios unfolding. Ah yes---I remember each and every one of them. I believe this was the Topps season that was used in that Pro Football Draft game that Parker Brothers or Milton Bradley or Hasbro (???) used. That was a fun game too. I just may have to scour ebay to get the 1972/1973/1974 era cards for Daryle Lamonica, Jim Kiick, and Gary Larsen---three of my favorites ever. Duane Thomas too (he was with Washington in 1973).

1973 was also a season of transition for some teams. Cleveland and Kansas City, powers of the 1960's, had their last somewhat decent season for a few years, and Denver turned in their first winning year ever.

Was Topps gum good? I don't really remember it too much. I always gave my baseball and football card gum to my sister.

Another dime well spent! Isn't it strange seeing Deacon Jones in a CHARGERS uniform? He had been a Ram through-and-through for many years. Also, 1973 would be the last season for Dick Butkus. He strained through the 1973 season on about 10 to 15 percent knees. Interesting that 1973 was also the last NFL seasons for Leroy Kelly and Don Maynard. Both headed to the WFL for a quick (bounce-able) paycheck in 1974---Kelly with Chicago and Maynard with Houston/Shreveport.

NOTE - Since the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins finished with identical 10-4-0 records, tie breaker rules were applied to determine which would be the NFC Wild Card. The teams did not meet head-to-head during the season, so Conference Winning Percentage was used. The Rams were 9-2-0 (0.818) against the NFC while the Redskins were 8-3-0 (0.727), therefore Los Angeles won the Wild Card.

I'll register my official predictions (guesses!) as to how the playoffs will go.

The Dolphins are heavy favorites. Scored the most points (26 ppg) and gave up the least (less than 5 per game---astounding!) And Cleveland over-performed a bit, so Miami it is. The other Saturday game is intriguing. Since the Cowboys are at home, I give them a slight edge.

Sunday will see the Vikings get a late winner against the Falcons (another over-performer), while Daryle Lamonica will come off the bench to engineer a come-from-behind win for the Silver and Black.

If my predictions hold true, then expect the Dolphins to head to the Super Bowl with a win over the Raiders, while the Vikings will slip by the Cowboys.

The Super Bowl could be a snoozer just like in real life---Dolphins will handle the Vikings rather easily. 2 touchdown plunges by Jim Kiick, and 2 more by Larry Csonka. Bob Griese takes the day off, replicating his 7 passing attempts he did historically.

I see that I got Jim Kiick in my latest football card purchases! Plus, Bubba Smith. Big Bubba played for the Colts for a number of years, but went to Oakland for the 1973 season. Two other favorites---MacArthur Lane and Ed Podolak. To me, they were a bit similar---steady runners who could also catch passes.

And oh, good Lord---Wacky Package Stickers. Hadn't thought of those in YEARS! Yes, I bought those and traded with friends.

Final stats team by team looked good. Interesting to see how they all turned out.

Soon, the 1973 playoffs will begin. I bought a new set of rabbit ears for my TV to make sure that all 6 channels come in clear! (remember when we all got maybe 6 or 7 channels at the most?)

Larry rushed for 1,003 yards in 1973. If we divide that by 14 games, then Csonka averaged 71.6 yards per game. Since my table is based upon 20 values, I did the following calculation: 71.6 x 20 = 1,432. If you add up all the values on Csonka's chart, they will equal 1,432. The majority of the values will be around his average, but since there will be games where he rushes for more or less, I factored that in as well. After every game, I roll a D20 to determine how many yards he gained. So if I roll a 4, then he had 55 yards in that game, but if I roll an 18, then he had 91 ! I made up similar tables for the Quarterbacks and Receivers. Hopefully over the course of a season, the system will provide for both realistic individual game statistics as well as total season results. It just adds a little more flavor and detail to the UQ game Smile

And you are correct, Sir ! Your Falcons did indeed beat the Vikings during Week 10 on Monday night by a score of 17 - 7. I hope to have their playoff game results posted tomorrow !

How did you decide what values to place withing the 20 chance chart? How time consuming was that to make? It really adds a layer to the UQ game which enhances enjoyment. I notice that you have multiple players listed on the teams' final season leaders charts. Do you make individual charts for each of the top 2 or 3 passers, rushers, and receivers? I got to hurry up and finish the Pro Boxing Alliance Tournament so I can pick back up on my 1980 UQ NFL Replay.

I built a matrix in Excel ! It probably took me longer to make that than it did to play out the entire season ! LOL !

Here's the table for those players who's rushing game average was between 71.0 to 71.9:

From here you can see where Csonka's 71.6 game chart came from. You'll also find Dave Hampton's rushing chart for Atlanta here as well. He averaged 71.2 yards per game in 1973.

I did charts for all the QBs, and the top four rushers and receivers for each team.

I would think those would be good for just about any modern era decade, right? Any chance you would like to share these?

You bet ! It should be compatible with any era ! I'm thinking of posting it in the downloads section once the season is over.

That will be great. I am looking forward to see if my Birdz can pull the sweep on Bud Grant and the Vikes. I believe I am gravitating toward the quick score type games just to have more time for all the types of replays I am interested in. Your thread is very interesting and fun to follow. The history of this great game of football is certainly a passion of mine and your replay is appreciated.

Thank you kindly, gridiron! I enjoy the games that generate realistic results and allow me to play out an entire season in a relatively short period of time. Adding some detail like the stats, uniforms, venues etc. makes it all the more fun for me. And now, my friend, I'm afraid that I must brace you for some bad news ....

At least the Steelers lost......go Vikes. They need a SB win. Bud Grant was too good a coach not to win a Lombardi trophy.

Hope my seats for the Los Angeles Rams @ Minnesota Vikings are not in the endzone/third base bleachers. They faced south, which meant that the COOOLLLDDD north wind hit you in the back all game long. I remember as a kid sitting in a sleeping bag watching the Vikings from those crummy seats. The top part (where we sat) was wooden benches, and the lower part were steel folding chairs bolted together. The seats in the left field pavillion weren't bad---they faced the field at about the best possible angle (hard to do in Met Stadium layout) plus BOTH team's benches were on that side. Did get to sit in those seats during the last Vikings season at The Met (1981).

Prediction---

Miami 24, Los Angeles 14.

Forgot that Super Bowl XIII was played at Rice Stadium in Houston. Always found that a strange setting, but I guess that The Astrodome was too small, but Houston as a city was in the right climate and was (and still is) a huge city. I remember that the weather wasn't the greatest during the game, just like your forecast.

These are great. Could easily be used for GWD. A scoring chart (there is an example on youtube) coupled with this would allow you to really flesh out a boxscore/game story. Thanks.

Both should work now. I took the spreadsheets and put them in a zip file. PHP doesn't seem to like the .xlsx extension with the latest update.

Much appreciated ! Please disregard the UQ 1977-78 NHL Replay spreadsheet that I had re-submitted for the download section from earlier today now that the old one is working again. Thank you kindly !

Got it to work...not a cache problem but a link problem.

Instead of using my favorites link I Google the link and it worked like a charm.
